Brush & Underbrush Removal in Ocala

Underbrush is where Marion County acreage goes to disappear. Saw palmetto, gallberry, grapevine, and volunteer scrub fill the space under your pines until the land is something you look at instead of something you use. Brush removal takes the understory out and leaves the canopy standing. Dollar for dollar, it is the fastest way to make land usable again.

Three reasons Marion County landowners clear brush

• Fire. The Florida Forest Service puts the last ten years at roughly 2,675 wildfires and just over 140,000 acres burned per year statewide. Unbroken palmetto understory is the fuel ladder that carries a ground fire up into the canopy and then into whatever you built. Marion County sits against the Ocala National Forest, and the Fort McCoy and Salt Springs side of the county is sand pine scrub, which burns hot and fast.
• Visibility and security. See your fence lines, your pond, your horses, your property corners. On acreage along the US 27 and CR 326 corridors, brush clearing is also how you finally see, and stop, the trespass and the dumping.
• Usable ground. Cleared understory turns "the woods" into shaded pasture edge, trail, and mowable land. It also shows dramatically better when it comes time to sell.

What the state actually means by defensible space

The Florida Forest Service's guidance is a safety zone extending 30 feet from the structure at a minimum, and 100 to 200 feet where the home sits on a slope or in heavy fuel. Thirty feet is the number most people have heard. It is also the one most Marion County homesites miss, because palmetto creeps back toward the porch a little every summer and nobody really notices until April.

On most homesites that band is an afternoon of machine work. We start at the house and work outward, and we leave the shade trees where they are. Breaking the fuel ladder means taking out the understory, not the canopy.

How we do it and what it costs

Light to moderate underbrush goes through a forestry mulcher at a few hundred dollars per acre and comes out as a mulch layer that slows the next round of regrowth. Heavy vine-and-palmetto tangles, or brush mixed with storm deadfall, price higher and get quoted after a ten-minute walk. Expect 2 to 4 acres a day in typical conditions, 1 to 2 when it is genuinely thick.

Brush removal is not land clearing, and the difference costs people money. The roots stay in the ground. If a slab, a septic field, or a pad is going on that spot, you want full clearing with grubbing instead, and we will tell you that on the walk rather than sell you the cheap job twice. Burning the debris is its own headache. Land clearing debris burns in Florida need authorization from the Florida Forest Service, and the rules catch people out. Mulching in place skips that step entirely, which is most of why we lead with it.

It grows back, so plan for that

Saw palmetto stores carbohydrates in a rhizome at or just below the soil surface and resprouts straight out of that reserve. The Forest Service's fire-effects review found burned palmetto stands can return to pre-burn cover in as little as one year. A mulching head grinds the tops and leaves that same rhizome sitting there, so the honest answer is that one pass buys you time, not a permanent result. Anyone promising otherwise has not worked here long.

That is not a reason to skip it. It is a reason to treat it like mowing instead of like a project. A maintenance pass every year or two holds the land open at a fraction of the first cut, and most of our brush clients schedule it exactly that way.
